More Than Registration

Registering a trademark is important. But a registered trademark is valuable only when it works for your business.
At Rights Plus, we look not only at whether your trademark can be registered in Japan, but also, when requested, at how the name may be perceived by Japanese consumers and whether it fits your business in the Japanese market.
- Can Japanese consumers read it?
- Can they pronounce and remember it?
- Does it have an unintended meaning or connotation?
- Does the name fit your business in Japan?
A Trademark Can Be Registrable — and Still Be a Poor Choice
A name may have no major legal obstacle to registration, but still be difficult for Japanese consumers to read, remember, search for, or recommend to others.
We believe these issues should be considered before you invest in trademark registration, marketing, packaging, websites, advertising and promotion.
The most expensive trademark may be the one that does not work and that you keep using anyway.
Optional: Japan Brand Fit Check

Will Your Brand Name Work in Japan?
Your brand name may sound perfect in your home country. But will Japanese customers find it easy to read, pronounce, remember, and recommend?
Our Japan Brand Fit Check (¥11,000) evaluates your proposed name from a Japanese linguistic, cultural, and business perspective.
We provide candid, practical advice—not just a list of potential problems. If we believe your name should be adjusted or reconsidered for the Japanese market, we will tell you why.

Overall Recommendation Keep / Consider modification / Reconsider before filing
We May Recommend That You Reconsider the Name

We will tell you if we think you should reconsider the name before filing.
And if our advice leads you to decide not to file the trademark with us, that is perfectly fine.
Our goal is not to maximize the number of trademark applications we file. What matters most to us is helping you choose and protect a brand that has a better chance of working for your business in Japan.
Sometimes, the best trademark advice is not to file.
There is No Perfect Name for Every Business
Easy pronunciation is generally an advantage, but not always.
For a mass-market product or service, an unfamiliar or difficult-to-pronounce name may create unnecessary friction. For a luxury or premium brand, however, some degree of unfamiliarity may contribute to exclusivity or a distinctive identity.
We therefore evaluate the name in the context of your actual business, including your target customers, price range, positioning and how the brand will be used.

Payment in Advance — at Each Stage

All fees are paid in advance at each stage of the trademark process.
For filing, we request payment of the applicable professional fees and JPO filing fees before filing the application.
If the trademark is approved for registration, we will then request payment of the registration procedure fee and JPO registration fee before completing registration.
This means you do not pay registration fees unless your trademark reaches the registration stage.

About Rights Plus
Rights Plus — More Than Registration.
The name “Rights Plus” reflects two ideas.

Meet Your Trademark Attorney
Shinji Kokubo
Japanese Patent & Trademark Attorney
Registration No. 23441
Founder, Rights Plus IP Office

From Marketing and Creative Development to Intellectual Property.
Before becoming a Japanese Patent & Trademark Attorney, I worked across several creative and business fields, including marketing and copywriting, game planning, manga scenario writing, web development, and IT education.
These experiences taught me that choosing the right words matters. A good brand name must do more than meet legal requirements. It should communicate effectively, connect with its intended audience, and support the business behind it.
After passing Japan’s national Patent Attorney Examination in 2023, I established Rights Plus IP Office in Tokyo in 2024.
Today, I combine my experience in marketing, creative development, and intellectual property to help businesses protect their trademarks in Japan.
I also develop my own digital products, including Tancolle, an online subscription-based study platform for Japan’s Patent Attorney Examination, launched in 2025.
As both a trademark professional and a creator, I understand that a brand name is not merely a legal asset. It is something a business must build, communicate, and develop over time.
My goal is not simply to help you register a trademark in Japan, but to help you protect a name that works for your business.
And once we’ve worked together, we’re practically friends!
